Throughout the course of U.S. history, the right to vote has been extended and protected for women and racial minorities. Groups that did not have the franchise, or that had been effectively barred or discouraged from using it, have become as active in their rates or voting as white men.
In the following table, note that women have voted in higher percentages than men in each election since 1992. It took decades for women to reach this milestone and dismiss the old adage that "politics is men's business." The rate of voting among African Americans was about 10 percentage points below white persons in 1992 and 1994, but more recently has lagged by only approximately 4 percentage points. Hispanics are not yet participating at rates similar to those of women and African Americans. History suggests that over time this will change.
1. Why might the rate of voting for women have increased over time?
2. How do presidential elections influence rates of voting? Why?
3. What factors might explain the change in the rate of voting among African Americans?

1. Women fought more than any other minority group for their suffrage. Of course the rate of voting is going to increase. They didn't fight for no reason. as long as a women's vote will have an affect on society, so will their vote.
ReplyDelete2.depends on your political party and what any given representative will offer.
3.depends on how an election will affect african americans. The greater and more positive affect on someone, the greater chance they will vote for that.
jacob clark 1/B sorry lol
Deletebecause women finally realized they matter.
ReplyDeletePeople will vote the same way as they vote for their president.
African Americans mostly vote for the president willing to just give away free food and what not.

1. they have beeen repressed for so long, that that finallly had to protest to the government ,(suffrage) and now they wnat to have thier opinions heard through voting
ReplyDelete2.It depends on the main focus of each candidate, on the issues that the american peoplw want solved.
3.They possibly didnt feel there were any issue that they had a prblem with, like jacob said "he greater and more positive affect on someone, the greater chance they will vote for that."

ReplyDelete1. I believe that the rate of voting for women has increased, because the mindset of society slowly but surely develop into the view that women could and should play a valuable role in changing America and even the world; that their role was no longer to be just responsible for their homes and their families. As society started to change, more and more women started to take advantage of their new roles in society which included the right to vote; thus increasing the rates of women voting.
2. Presidential elections greatly increase the voting rates, as more people than usual take interest in deciding who becomes the next president. Each candidate offers new opinions and promises that appeal to the nations citizens. During the presidential election mass media, and family and friends greatly influence a person to vote, more so than in local and state elections.
3. Factors that explain the change in voting among African Americans are that there are new laws that have been created to open new opportunities for African Americans. African Americans have new privileges that had not been awarded to them for so long in the past. African Americans play a vital role in society now, as they take on leadership roles. When taking these factors into consideration, more African Americans start to vote.

ReplyDelete1) Women had fought for so long to gain the right to vote and are not going to easily let this win fade away. Each women's vote should be a reminder of the effort they made in the past.
2) A presidential election influences rates of voting by appealing to a group. If he appeals to "set group" by telling them what they want to hear then a majority of that group will vote for that candidate.
3) Like women, African Americans have too gained the right to vote. Maybe they recently have voted more because before no president has addressed issues they want to hear.
1.Women have a more of a stand in today society and are able to vote. Women are not treated as housewives like the past anymore.
ReplyDelete2. Parties will get the peoples attention and solve problems the public asks.An example is trying to do what the people want to get votes.
3.African americans vote more because maybe a problem or an interest sparks their attention.

ReplyDelete1) Women are no longer the have fought hard and gained their rights.
2) Depends on the Political Party, and what the candidate is offering to the people of the USA
3) Since they were always the minorities and didnt have any say in what happened here in the usa, but now that there is a big enough group of them, they realized they had a great influence in what all happens

ReplyDelete1. Two main factors that contribute to the higher voting percentage over men is for one women are no longer the minority with having a greater populous, and two since Women's Suffrage, women were slowly but always gaining more attention in every aspects of the American Public, voting just happens to be one thing.
2. First thing that you must consider is the statistics on who votes for who. Generally, women and blacks vote democrat, plus if the Presidential Nominee is liberal that's just an added bonus; also with women and blacks being of greater populous then the previous dominant voter (white males), you would most likely see more democrat voters. Plus you must waiver the idea that many people do not vote by political party but on whether who is Liberal or Conservative. Point is if you have more Nominees for one party then you will generally see more votes that way.
3. Along with Women Suffrage, when blacks were given the right to vote, the slowly but surely gave more political attention along with the other numerous opportunities they possessed. Without prejudice intended, generally blacks live where poverty is relevant, so being back in the early and mid 1900's blacks didn't own technology that others did to be informed about politics, and now that more people today have TVs, and Radios to access the political media, we not only see an increase of voting for blacks but for the whole country, with the will to vote pending.
1. The rate of women's vote has increased over time because their voice was never heard before. Now that they have an influence and can somewhat alter the way that the USA is governed, they vote. Women mostly want to be able to maintain the freedoms they were given.
ReplyDelete2. Presidential elections influence rates of voting depending on their stand point. If their political views are related to the majority and seem beneficial to a group of people, more people will vote for them. And vice verse.
3. Before, when African Americans did not have the right to vote, they were treated poorly. This is sort of just like how women's voting rates have increased. The minorities want to maintain their freedoms and live a satisfactory life, so they vote based off of what will benefit them.
1) The rate of women's voting has increased over time because they have earned their right to vote, and gender roles have also become less set recently. before, even though women could vote, they believed they belonged at home taking care of kids and cleaning. Today, more women work, and there are also more female politicians, perhaps encouraging the female voters.
ReplyDelete2) Presidential elections influence rates of voting through their political standpoints. For instance, a presidential candidate who's main goal was immigration reform may increase the voting rates of Hispanics, just as a female presidential candidate may increase voting rates among women.
3) African-Americans have also earned the right to vote, and may feel strongly for that right. They also may vote more when there is a candidate who identifies with them. For instance, 2008 was the highest voting rate for African-Americans on the chart. Who was the candidate is 2008? Barack Obama, the first African-American president, someone with whom they can identify.
Francis Perez
ReplyDelete1. The rate of voting for women has increased over time because women fought for their suffrage and want their voice to be heard.
2. Presidential elections influence rates of voting because depending on the issues that the candidates address(and sometimes the candidate's appearance)certain people may vote or not vote.
3. Factors that may explain the change in voting among African Americans are that the Africans Americans have also fought for their suffrage and want their voices to be heard, candidates are addressing issues that they care and feel strongly about, and they have identified with the candidates especially in 2008 when Barack Obama was elected president, the rate of African American voting sky rocketed.

ReplyDelete1. Women throughout history have nearly always been deemed lower than a man. So when they receive power equal to that of a man, it is only logical to believe they'll exercise that power at a frequency equal to, or greater than, of men. After all, men are more likely to take the power to vote for granted since they've had it much longer.
2.Presidential elections always have the highest voter turnouts because it is an election that will be much more influential to politics than say the governor of a state.
3.Politics at the time probably interested the African American population much more for example the 2008 election with Obama which had the highest voter turnout in the African American population between 1992-2010.

ReplyDelete1)Women are more likely to vote because it's a right they have been dying to get. Moreover there are more women than there are men. And men tend to take the right to vote as granted, whereas a women think of it as a possibility to finally be heard.
2) Depending on what the candidate is going for can affect the voting rate of: race, gender, and sex. Say a candidate wanted equal rights for minority group, surely African Americans and Hispanics voting rate would hike. Or if a candidate were to go for legalizing illegal immigrants ti would decrease the voting rate's of conservatives while increasing the voting rate of Hispanics and other immigrants.
3) African Americans now have new doors open for them. One of them is education. With education African Americans can now be: doctors, lawyers, CEO, politicians and even president. The more educated you are the more likely you are to care about politics and how it affects you.

ReplyDelete1. The rate women have voted has increased over time because they no longer have to fight for the right to vote. Women are no longer being thought of as the one who stays home with the kids. There are more women in the work force now more than ever and because of this it has given women more of a chance to be apart of not only the life in the job world but the life in politics. More women are apart of the political system now a days as well giving women more encouragement to be apart of this as well.
2. Presidential elections may influence the rate of voting because of what that presidential candidate stands for. If a presidential candidate was fighting for more ways to help minority groups, more minority groups would vote for them. If a presidential candidate was fighting for gay rights, more gay rights activists would vote for that person.
3. Obama.

ReplyDelete1. They earned the right to, why not abuse the poop out of it? What's the point of fighting for the right to vote/participate in political affairs for eons and not using the chance when you get it?
2. Depends on what the President promises or what they are. If they promise more things for a certain demographic, then the demographic might believe them and vote for them.
3. With the election of Obama, more African Americans go like "Black powah" And are getting involved more into politics.
Kymber Myers 1B
ReplyDelete1. Woman were the one group that fought the most for suffrage and they finally got it so why not let them vote? They deserved it
2. Depends on who believes what, if majority believes one specific candidate then that candidate will be very popular thus influencing the voting rates
3. Just like Jorean stated, in the Obama election blacks were glad that there was finally going to a black president and ot more involved into polictics
I believe that the voting for women has increased because they no longer are looked down upon on for voting. Even after gaining suffrage women had a role in society where they where expected to be home with the kids, politics were considered very much still a mans world. With roles in a society changing I believe women are more respected in the world today and aren't looked down upon for voting and having a say in the world of politics because it's not a can't world anymore.
ReplyDelete2. Presidential elections always bring a high voter turn out. I think people are more aware about the presidential elections, the view of the candidates are all over the media, for months all the country is talking about are the elections and it's a lot harder to ignore than say a local election. My mom always votes in presidential elections because she knows when they are and who's on the ballot versus local elections when we never receive much information about the candidates.
3.I believe the spike in voting turn out for African Americans is because there was a candidate that they felt like they could relate To easier.
1. I think that the rate of women has increased because they have fought for their right to vote and the more they are educated about politics the more likely they are to keep voting.
ReplyDelete2. I think that presidential elections have a higher turnout because it's all over the media. When the elections come around the candidates faces are plastered everywhere, it's kind of hard not to notice.
3. I think that the factors that cause African Americans to vote are if they can relate to the candidate, if they like or if they see that the candidate is going to push for something that will benefit them. If they see that it's going to help them in some way.
1. I think the reason women have started voting more and more over the years is because I think there was a lower amount of women who were old enough to vote when they gained suffrage than are able to vote now so as more and more women are able to vote more and more of them are voting.
ReplyDelete2. On the years that there are presidential elections more people vote. This is likely a result of lack of knowledge and people thinking that the presidential elections are the only votes that matter or effect them. Also, the fact that there is so much media coverage of the presidential elections you can't not know that it's there an election going on and some people, like me, may have not known that there was voting to be done every two years.
3. The rise in African-American voting may have occurred because they realized that if they don't like something they can try to change it, I mean every vote counts so theirs do too. Voting more means that they have more people in office to appeal to what would benefit them and that's what politics is, isn't it? Figuring out who's going to help who and who has similar ideas as you about different issues.
